Developmental Disabilites Awareness Program
Master's Research Project
The mission for the program is as follows "Our Program engages typically developing students and students with mild disabilities from third to fifth grade by providing awareness and inclusion using developmentally appropriate content that will address a different disability monthly in the classroom setting. Providing students with necessary information that will lead to a more effective learning environment, a better understanding of their fellow peers and how to take preventative measures for bullying."
The philosophy driving the program began with the mindset that if a student is equipped with informative and engaging activities which are readily available, they will be more understanding as well as accepting of peers with disabilities. Children are afraid of what they do not know. Creating a safe space where they can discuss disabilities as well as be exposed to a new world can be challenging and eye- opening.
